Black Market Wine Co.
At Black Market Wine Co. we’re all about breaking the rules set up by the traditional winemaking establishment. Small and nimble, we seek opportunities that others often don’t. We know the land, the climate, and the people. We explore the valley’s vineyards and kick tractor tires while talking shop with local farmers. We’re arbitrageurs, seeking ripe acquisitions across the Okanagan Valley and crafting these into inspired wines for the savvy. We blend the greatest wine-growing and wine-making talent together for unique collaborations. Black Market Wine Co. is non-traditional to the core.
Find us and try our wines…you’ll be impressed. Trust us.
A syndicate is a collaboration of individuals working toward a shared interest. The age-old practice of blending wines is done with a similar purpose, hence the name we’ve chosen for our flagship red wine. In The Syndicate, the individual varietals are working together to elevate the depth and complexity of the finished wine.
For the 2012 vintage, we’re stepping into the Old World through the New World’s front door. This medium-bodied Bordeaux-style blend is an elegant combination of Merlot (40%), Petit Verdot (29%), Cabernet Franc (26%) and a splash of Malbec (5%).
This wine was grown in sun-drenched vineyards in Oliver and Osoyoos, and harvested between October 10th and 28th. Each varietal was fermented separately in small lots and aged for 18 to 21 months in French oak barrels, of which 50% were new. The final blend was assembled, bottled and aged a further 9 months before being released.
An elegant, well-balanced wine that is approachable now, but with the acidity and tannin structure to enable cellaring and enjoyment over the next 5+ years. The wine opens with seductive aromas of cherries, blackberries and plum, layered with sweet spices, cedar and a touch of vanilla. Once you are able to pull your nose out of the glass, you’ll find equally enticing flavours of both red and black fruits, smoked meat and a hint of cinnamon on the palate. The silky tannins are well integrated with the acid structure, making this an exceptionally balanced wine.
From the moment the grapes were harvested, The Syndicate was destined to be a food wine. We achieved a balanced wine with enough acidity and tannins to enjoy with a variety of foods, especially with grilled or roasted red meats.

With a name like Black Market, it should come as no surprise that there are a few things going on that we just can’t talk about. We set out to create a white blend that was exotically aromatic, crisp on the palate and balanced by citrus and tropical fruitiness…and that’s exactly what the Secret Society delivers.
But you know how the old saying goes: “If we told you what was in it, we’d have to…” You get the idea. Figure out what’s in this blend and you’re in our Secret Society!
We’re not going to make it easy on you to figure out what’s inside these bottles, but we sure had fun making it! The three varietals were all fermented separately under controlled temperatures to maintain the fresh aromatics of the fruit. One of the mystery varietals even spent 6 weeks in acacia barrels to soften the wine and round out the mouthfeel. The grapes in this blend come from vineyards in Okanagan Falls and Osoyoos.
This wine offers exotic aromas of lychee, yellow citrus fruits, Fuji apple, orange blossom, sweet baking spices and a hint of acacia. Dry on the palate, you’ll find grapefruit, Meyer lemon, and a touch of baked apple, all balanced together with crisp acidity.
With its refreshing fruit flavours, the Secret Society is perfect for an afternoon on the patio or an evening of al fresco dining. Pair it with grilled fish, mildly-spiced Asian dishes, or a market salad with grilled chicken.

Noble Beast is a collaborative project between husband and wife Julian and Lisa Bakker. The couple dreamed about making their own wine. The dog on the label represents one aspect of the Noble Beast (and Julian and Lisa’s favorite Boston Terrier, Basil).
So how does a musician and photographer turned grad student get in to wine? During Julian and Lisa’s honeymoon through the Okanagan in 2003, they really fell in love with wine and the land and the grapes. While Lisa became a NICU nurse, and Julian pursued art and education, they never lost the idea that one day they’d like to have a little piece of land and make wine a bigger part of their lives.
Julian and Lisa are very proud of the first two wines they’ve released, a beautiful 2011 red wine blend of Merlot and Cab Sauv, and a fresh, delicious, 2012 Gewürztraminer.
The wines are the result of their creative energy and own particular vision of what they love about wines, combined with the best Okanagan fruit, and of course, the award winning skills of winemaker Mark Simpson.
Julian and Lisa have pursued quality over quantity at every step of the way, and we’ve created some great wines that reflect our cool-climate home base, and are as complex and well integrated as our old world favorites.
Noble Beast’s releases for 2014 are already shaping up beautifully in the cellar. These first wines are the cornerstone of the couple’s long-term plan to bring production of these wines to their home on Vancouver Island, and develop a small vineyard in order to produce a nice estate wine.
This is our signature wine for the 2012 season, and choosing an early ripening, hardy varietal such as Gewurz felt like an appropriate way to showcase our focus on wines that excel on Vancouver Island and reflect its climate. It’s also part of our 5-year plan to start making these wines at a facility here in Nanaimo, and this wine reflects these goals.
This classical, cool-climate Gewürztraminer has a unique elegance, equally at home in the dining room or on the patio. We used fruit from a single vineyard in Osoyoos, BC, picked at the perfect ripeness and carefully fermented into a crisp, dry wine composed of all the right notes; scents of mineral, lychee, green apple and peach, a fresh taste, and a smooth finish. Enjoy with noodles and cheese, fresh seafood, and even grilled meats and veggies.
Our blend of 70% Merlot and 30% Cab has got body like a supermodel! A perfect harmony of fruit and new French oak create bold tastes of red fruit, vanilla, and toast, with subtle flavours of forest green and bell peppers. It feels warm in the mouth, a pleasant intensity brought on by tannins that are strong but well integrated with the body of the wine.
When decanted, the initial impression is of smoke, horse tack, and blackcurrant fruit. After sitting, the merlot begins to reveal itself underneath the cab with scents of blueberries, plums, and strawberries coming up through the smoke, and vanilla and liquorice from the French oak. Simply swirl in the glass and appreciate the deep ruby colour of this wine, and the smokiness rises to the surface.
This wine exhibits a beautiful sense of place, with flavours and scents of earth, fruit and fire all blending into one. Enjoy with barbequed meats and grilled vegetables such as eggplant, and expect great things from this wine both now and after a few years in the cellar.
